FENIX XCELL SIGN MALAYSIAN STAR IRAWAN

Arie Irawan
Arie Irawan

Fenix XCell have announced the signing of upcoming Malaysian golfer Arie Irawan. The 26 year old, currently playing on the Asian Tour and Asian Development Tour, is making his debut as a Fenix XCell player at this week's PGM Northport Championship on the ADT.

The big-hitting Irawan, a two-time winner on Asia's secondary circuit, endured a difficult 2016 plagued by injury, but is hoping to bounce back in 2017 and regain his Asian Tour card. Of his new partnership with Fenix XCell, Irawan said "Fenix XCell has really grown in the last couple of years and become a huge name in Asia. Not only do I feel confident wearing the colours and designs of Fenix XCell, the fabrics are comfortable and breathable, so I know I can perform to my best. It's also an honour to be a part of Team Fenix and to be associated with players such as Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Scott Hend. I look forward to hopefully emulating their success in the upcoming years."

Michael Moir, Managing Director of Fenix XCell, said "Arie is a player we've known about for a long time, since he graduated onto the Asian Tour from the ADT in 2014. He had a tough year last year with the injury, but we really believe he has the ability and work ethic to come back in 2017 and ultimately go far in the game. Malaysia is a market we are looking to expand in, and with Arie being one of their brightest prospects we saw this as being a fantastic opportunity. We're confident this will mark the start of a long and successful partnership."

Irawan, based out of Kuala Lumpur, has been a consistent performer on the ADT, finishing 5th on the Order of Merit in 2014 (securing his Asian Tour card in the process), and 7th in 2015. His two victories came at the 2015 Sime Darby Harvard Championship and the 2015 ICTSI Eagle Ridge Invitational.

Mr. Michael Moir, Managing Director of Fenix XCell stated, “Fenix XCell is in fact a Scottish brand but it began here in Thailand which has been my home for the last 11 years. We believe strongly in the ability and the potential of Thai golfers and we've always welcomed them as our brand ambassadors. Fenix XCell have been in talks with Kiradech about this partnership for quite some time, so for it to finally be announced is very exciting for us. Initially, our endorsement contract term will be 2 years but we are of course hopeful of forging a long term partnership. We feel Kiradech not only has unlimited potential with his game, but he can be a huge influence in driving some of our new collections which he will wear in his tournaments around the world. We also have plans for a fun cartoon collection which Kiradech will design specifically for his fans, expected to come to completion in 2-3 months. We are thrilled to have him join our team and we look forward to working with him, not only to help develop and market our future products, but more importantly to support and assist him in achieving his own goals in the game.”

Kiradech also talked about becoming a Brand Ambassador for the Fenix XCell team. “I have to thank Fenix XCell for letting me be a part of its team and for believing that I can help bring growth to the company. I am also very proud to be a part of a foreign brand that started here in Thailand. I have worn golf clothes from various brands and I must admit that the quality that Fenix Xcell provides with its products is right there at the top. Outstanding improvement can be easily seen in the past 4-5 years. There are a variety of interesting designs and a great selections of materials, alongside a very professional PR team. Another great opportunity is for me to also take part in the next Fenix XCell collection. Some will have my Kiradech cartoon logo on them. I am very excited and can’t wait to see the fans' reactions once they see them”, Kiradech said.

Kiradech will be joining fellow European Tour winners Scott Hend and Sam Brazel as brand ambassadors for Fenix XCell. Australian Hend surpassed $1 million in earnings on his way to clinching the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2016, notching up his 8th tour win in the process. He also achieved a career high position of 27th in the 2016 Race to Dubai. 38-year-old Brazel magnificently held off a strong field at the UBS Hong Kong Open this past December to clinch his maiden European Tour title.

HEND CLAIMS ORDER OF MERIT CROWN AT UBS HONG KONG OPEN

SCOTT HEND
Hong Kong, December 11: Scott Hend secured the prestigious Asian Tour’s Order of Merit crown at the season-ending UBS Hong Kong Open on Sunday, becoming the first Australian to win the title and the fourth player to surpass US$1 million in earnings during a season.

The 43-year-old Hend won twice at the True Thailand Classic and Queen’s Cup, also in Thailand, and finished top-10 on three other occasions including a runner-up outing at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland during a memorable 2016 campaign.

“It’s quite special. Obviously winning any Order of Merit anywhere is very special, and this will stay with me forever,” said Hend after he carded a closing four-over-par 74 on Sunday, to increase his season haul to US$1,004,792.

“It’s just a culmination of a lot of years on the Asian Tour and coming so close and not getting over the line; it’s finally nice to reach the top and grab the trophy.”

Hend’s only rival for the Merit crown, Marcus Fraser, needed to win the US$2 million UBS Hong Kong Open to have any chance of winning top spot but he failed to do so at the Hong Kong Golf Club, signing off with a closing 66.

A disappointing campaign in the World Golf Championships event in Doral at the start of the year proved to be the spark that Hend needed to get his 2016 season going as he returned to Asia the following week and won in Thailand.

“It’s a bit of a funny start to the year because I played in Doral, was 22-over par for four rounds and we came to Thailand and all of a sudden, the following week I was 18-under,” he recalled.

“I just managed to level it off and play really solid during the middle of the year and fortunately enough for me, I won a couple tournaments and I came in a couple top fives. So it was quite nice.

“It’s been a great year. I only missed out on one goal and that was obviously to get top-50 in the world and play the Masters next year. It was a hard task; I had to come second here or I had to win. All in all, it’s a very good year.”

India’s Jeev Milkha Singh was the first to hit the seven-figure mark in Asia where he earned US$1.45 million in 2008 while Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand won US$1.12 million in 2013 and 2015 Merit champion Anirban Lahiri accumulated US$1.13 million last season.

In what is his 10th season on the Asian Tour, Hend has capped a truly impressive career on the region’s premier circuit with nine victories. He also finished runner-up on the Order of Merit twice in 2013 and 2014 and was fourth on three other occasions in 2007, 2009 and 2014, indicating his consistency in his game.

By far, Hend, one of the longest drivers on Tour, is also the most successful international golfer on the Asian Tour and has won eight tournaments over the last five years, the most by any player in Asia during the same time.

He also enjoyed the honour of representing Australia alongside Fraser at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August when golf made a welcome return into the programme following a lapse of over 100 years.

Despite his success, he vowed to work even harder to keep up his success rate. Hend said: “I’m going to restart in Abu Dhabi. I’ve got four weeks off. I’ve got to get in the gym for four weeks and try to strengthen these old muscles and get them firing again.”

BRILLIANT BRAZEL SINKS LATE BIRDIE FOR DRAMATIC WIN AT UBS HONG KONG OPEN

Sam Brazel
Hong Kong, December 11: Australian Sam Brazel enjoyed a life-changing victory at the season-ending UBS Hong Kong Open on Sunday, sinking an eight-foot birdie on the last hole for a dramatic win.

The 37-year-old Brazel showed nerves of steel under pressure to fire a final round of two-under-par 68 and lift his maiden Asian Tour title by one stroke with an aggregate of 13-under-par 267 at the Hong Kong Golf Club.

Brazel, who earned US$330,330 and finished seventh on the final Asian Tour Order of Merit, pipped playing partner and Ryder Cup star Rafa Cabrera Bello, who missed a long birdie attempt at the closing hole in the US$2 million tournament sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and Hong Kong Golf Association.

Andrew Dodt of Australia and England’s Tommy Fleetwood, who were in the thick of battle on a glorious Sunday afternoon, shared third place on 269 after a 68 and 66 respectively while Malaysia’s Danny Chia emerged as the top Asian in tied eighth place after a closing 67.

Tied with Cabrera Bello heading down the 18th hole which is called “The Ultimate” and rated as one of the toughest in Asia, Brazel produced a stunning six iron approach shot to set up his winning birdie. Brazel was visibly emotional as he lifted the prestigious UBS Hong Kong Open trophy which was his first major win since turning professional in 2002.

“I’m still in a little bit of a shock. There’s some seriously good names on that trophy and it’s great to be a part of it. There’s a lot of great history in this event and this venue. It feels amazing, I’m speechless. What a win. I don’t know how else to explain it. I feel privilege to be playing first of all and I feel ecstatic,” said a jubilant Brazel.

The Australian began the week ranked 480th on the Official World Golf Ranking but showed his poise, especially on the back nine with a hat-trick of birdies from the 11th to 13th hole getting him back into contention following two bogeys on his outward nine.

With the title on the line, he later conceded his iron shot into the last had a touch of fortune. “It (shot on last hole) was kind of unexpected. I was trying to take it over the middle of the bunker in front of the green and play it safe.

“But I hit it a little thin and a little right but I’ll take it. The satisfying part was the putt. I’ve been working hard with my putting and it’s nice to stand there and roll one in the middle when it really counts,” said Brazel

Three dropped shots on the seventh and eighth holes put Cabrera Bello out of the lead which he has held at least a share of  it since the opening day. However, brave birdies on 16 and 17 pushed him back to the top alongside Brazel but it wasn’t to be his day as he closed with a 69.

“Obviously the week if you look at it overall, it's a great week, finishing second. Just a little disappointed today. I managed to start good again but then struggled halfway through the front nine. I battled back really hard again, same as yesterday. But then Sam just played a fantastic 18th hole,” said the Spaniard.
“Obviously I am still proud of the performance. I messed up a little obviously on seven and eight but I stayed calm and waited for my chances. I gave myself lots of opportunities. Some didn't fall, but at the end, 16 and 17, they were two great putts that did go in. The one on 18th, almost, as well. In the end, it's a good week. It's just a bitter taste finishing runner-up.”

Scores after round 4 of the UBS Hong Kong Open Championship 2016 being played at the par 70, 6710 Yards Hong Kong GC course (am - denotes amateur):

IN-FORM HEND TAKES OVER MERIT LEAD

SCOTT HEND
Sentosa, Singapore, 5 September 2016: Australian Scott Hend has powered his way to the top of the Asian Tour Order of Merit following a runner-up finish at the Omega European Masters over the weekend.

The big-hitting Aussie was denied a third Asian Tour win of the season by Sweden’s Alex Noren but his fine performance at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club meant he replaced countryman Marcus Fraser in pole position in the race for the Merit crown with earnings of US$714,112.

Hend’s noteworthy finish in Switzerland was worth US$337,230, enough to consign Fraser to second place as he came in tied-36th at the Swiss showpiece, which is the only tournament in Europe sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.

This was the first time since his victory at the Maybank Championship Malaysia in February that Fraser, who has earned US$658,203 this season, had relinquished his Merit lead.

Korea’s Jeunghun Wang, who did not play in Switzerland, remained in third place on the rankings with US$484,386 while Filipino Miguel Tabuena stayed in fourth position on US$354,176 after missing the halfway cut.
Hend, who is a nine-time Asian Tour champion and the most successful international golfer in the region, tipped his hat to his rival who holed a long birdie putt in extra time for the victory.

“I think Alex played the 18th hole way better than I did and made an awesome birdie for a deserving win. He played fantastic golf but I didn’t play quite well enough. That’s golf. You can’t complain when you get into position to win but somebody makes a great birdie on the play-off hole to win,” said Hend.

Since joining the Asian Tour in 2007 after a hand injury curtailed his career in America, Hend has proven to be very successful in the region. He holds the most titles for an international golfer and has finished second on the Order of Merit twice in the last three seasons and fourth on three other occasions.

Hend, who represented Australia in the recent Olympic Games in Rio, won the True Thailand Classic presented by PTT and Queen’s Cup, also in Thailand, in the first half of the year and his season’s earnings to date is already a career-best for him in Asia.

India’s Rashid Khan, meanwhile, moved inside the top-30 of the Order of Merit for the first time this season after finishing tied for 41st. Khan’s performance allowed him to learn more about himself and the various aspects needed to improve his game.

“There are a lot of positive things to take out of this week. I made the cut after a long time and I know what I need to improve on,” he said.

“I need to take a little bit more time before I hit a shot. I do it too quickly now and I’m missing on the wrong side,” added the two-time Asian Tour winner.

The Asian Tour will take a two-week break before heading to the Land of the Rising Sun for the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup from September 22 to 25.

HISTORY FOR HEND AT VENETIAN MACAO OPEN

Macao, October 18: Australian Scott Hend claimed a second Venetian Macao Open victory in three years after holding off title holder Anirban Lahiri and Chiragh Kumar of India with an impressive final round of five-under-par 66 on Sunday.

Big-hitting Hend cruised to a three-stroke triumph at the Macau Golf and Country Club to become only the second player after China’s Zhang Lian-wei to win twice at the US$1 million Asian Tour event with a tournament record of 20-under-par 264.

It was sweet revenge for the 42-year-old Aussie who was pipped by Lahiri last year and he collected the winner’s cheque of US$180,000. Lahiri and Kumar shared second place after closing with a 66 and 65 respectively.

“Feel relief and rewarded as I’ve worked hard the last few weeks in Europe,” said Hend, who entered the last day with a three-shot cushion.

“I knew Anirban wasn’t going to go away. He’s a great player and I just went out there with the aim to shoot a good score as I knew they had to catch me. I can’t really remember much about 2013 (his win). I remember more about last year where I didn’t play solid down the stretch and Anirban got me. So this year, it is a different feeling.”
